The Beautiful Futures Lab is a distributed network of people who recognize that nature operates through a creative intelligence far deeper than we've been trained to see and who want to bring that intelligence into their personal and professional lives.
We are people from across diverse fields who sense that human intelligence is an expression of the same force that builds coral reefs, shapes watersheds, and drives evolution. We believe this intelligence of nature is not a metaphor and we need to restore it's agency in the human dimension.
The BFL is where people find each other to develop the perceptual capacities to experience nature's intelligence directly, to better understand it through research, and to develop cultural intervention projects that express it.

It starts online. You encounter the ideas through Rich's YouTube channel, Substack, podcast conversations, and social media. Something resonates. You follow your instincts.

Organically composed online cohorts bring professionals into facilitated sessions exploring ecological intelligence as relational intelligence.
Advance through the Person, Place, Practice, Prosper methodology.

Our Origin School gatherings on Nantucket, Cape Cod, and elsewhere move the work from ideas into embodiment. Make a pilgrimage into direct encounter with place, creatures, geological time, and shared meals with others on the same path.

For those who go deeper, the practitioner pathway develops your capacity to recognize and cultivate ecological intelligence in organizations and communities — and ultimately to certify it through the Oika Star® certification and rating ecosystem.
Dr. Rich Blundell is traveling across the US establishing educational partnerships and seeking new participation.
Beautiful Futures Lab initiates projects that prepare people for lives of purpose, contribution, and belonging. Through educational programming, strategic partnerships, and public communication, BFL builds infrastructure for human flourishing grounded in our relationship to the living systems of the Earth.
We also prepare people for thriving within convergent economic, environmental, and social disruptions. Graduates develop the resilience and relational intelligence to prosper through what's coming, with pathways to become certified practitioners who bring this understanding into organizations ready for transformation.
This spring, I'm partnering with polymathy scholar Dr. Angela C. Meyers to offer a live online cohort integrating Oika principles with her Polymath Laboratory methodology.
Human beings are hungry for exactly the story you're sharing, and the way you're empowering us to experience it together.

Dr. Blundell's way of engaging a very interesting story captured all our attention, from adults to tweens/teens. It's rare that a learning event can do that for all age groups.— Claire Shields, Parent
I was especially moved by Rich Blundell's idea that creativity and ecology are deeply connected. That really resonated with me. It made me feel empowered, like my own creativity can actually be a part of a bigger ecological story. -- Jay, Student

Rich Blundell is a neurodivergent ecologist who spent thirty years immersed in Earth's wildest habitats—coral reefs, rainforests, deserts, tundra—studying how nature shapes human consciousness. From this research he developed Oika, a living philosophy grounded in science that produces an abiding sense of belonging.
He holds a PhD in Big History from Macquarie University, a USCG 100-Ton Master license, and has received recognition from NSF, PBS, National Geographic, and the Rockefeller Philanthropies. He currently serves as Scientist-in-Residence at Maria Mitchell Association.
But the work starts where he started: Duxbury Bay, where he learned to swim in 1972 and fished commercially before leaving on what became a three-decade apprenticeship. Now he returns with what he learned. Read his full story →
